How I Switched from Prosthetics to Programming (and Why It Still Shapes How I Work)

Before studying computer science, I worked as a prosthetic technician for the NHS. It was a lot of hands on work like casting sockets, designing limbs, and making adjustments for patients. I really enjoyed it, but as time passed, I found I was more interested in how systems worked, why they broke, and how to improve or rethink them. The practical side was fantastic, but I wanted to delve deeper into the theoretical side behind things.

So I jumped. On paper, switching from prosthetics to programming can seem like a significant leap, but in reality, it wasn't. Both are connected with solving real world problems. In prosthetics, this involved determining how to make something work for a person with highly precise requirements. In technology, it means developing software that is efficient, adaptable, and truly helpful. The tools differ, but the thinking remains the same.

A lot of how I work now stems from that experience. I don't just jump into coding, I plan, prototype, and test. I'm interested in edge cases and unique user requirements. I don't assume something works simply because it runs. And I try not to overengineer something simply because I can. Simplicity, precision, and adaptability all came from the workshop, not from education.

I didn't leave prosthetics because I disliked it, I left because I became more interested in something else altogether. But I still carry the past with me into what I build now, and weirdly enough, it's improved my development skills.
